When we think about motorcycles on this Island, it is impossible not to think about the Raposos. A family that is connected to motorcycles since the two wheel vehicles were first brought to the Island. We went to visit them at their workshop/repair shop in Socas, to talk with Luís Raposo, the son, but we ended up spending the whole afternoon talking with and about Luís Raposo, the father, all his adventures and legacy. Old and incredible photos, many stories, some life lessons, good aguardente (a kind of brandy) and a lot of laughs made our day. More than a profession for them, this family is all about the love and thrill of listening to an old motor working, making noise again. Riding for the love of it. It was always about that, and still is for the Raposos. Respect the true original Raiders!

How do you describe yourself?
I’m Luís Raposo, born in São Miguel Island, and I’m 32 years old.

How is it to live on the island?
It’s a good life.

What do you like doing on your free time?
Without a doubt, riding a motorcycle, whether on dirt or asphalt.

How, or why, did you start riding a motorcycle?
When I was 5 years old, my father offered me my first motorcycle. As you know he always owned a motorcycle shop; so, I was raised among them. He was also a champion in his racing days. We have the races in the family blood. It runs in everyone's family.

Best spot to ride?
If I’m riding my enduro motorcycle, I like going to Sete Cidades; if it’s to practice some motocross, I like going to Soluções M motocross track.

Favorite motorcycle?
My Beta Racing 300.

Hobbies?
Practicing motocross and enduro. Also, whenever I can, working out during the week, so I can have fun on the bike and have more resistance. You need to keep in shape. It is very energy draining to run a motocross bike.

Fun or competition?
I like competition better, it warms up my blood, it makes you forget everything and just focus on the bike and track. But I have to say that it also tastes great just having fun with my friends, helping them overcome some obstacles, so they can also be included in the sport.

One music / one band?
Music - Cavalo de Tróia, by MC Kevin
Band - Red Hot Chili Peppers

Wine or beer?
Beer!! Super Bock, fresquinha from the bottle.

What has been keeping you busy?
Motorcycles, motorcycles and family. I always wanted to follow my father's profession, selling motorcycles and repairing them. And that's what I've been doing all my life and I love it.

Follow Luis Raposo or go pay them a visit, at Canada Nova do Populo nº77, 9500-608 Ponta Delgada, even if you don't have a problem with your motorcycle.
