The day we met Sara at her house was already a promising one - a warm sunny afternoon, after a few days of rain on the island. We were received at her family house in such a friendly and generous way that we felt immediately in love. Spending most of her time on and off the island, she has been taking the azorean soul to the ears of everyone listening to her music. With the pandemic, things changed a little bit, but she has taken the time to get deeper into herself and the island. It was a pleasure to visit her studio, and to easily get inspired in such a lovely and beautiful house, surrounded by interesting objects and stories everywhere. It ended up being a magical afternoon.
Who are you?
That’s a question I will probably only be able to answer a few decades from now. At the moment, I’m still trying to figure that out. We’re constantly evolving, and I hope to keep doing that continuously for a long time.
How’s life on the Island?
Good and quiet for now. Writing music, chilling, making puzzles, drinking tea and trying to stay away from “the ‘vid”, like Kevin Hart would say.
Favorite place on the island? Why?
This is the hardest question! I love so many different places on the island for so many different reasons. Depends on the day and on the mood. But generally, I always feel great when I’m next to the sea. The sound of it, the smell of it, the energy of it. It’s always lovely, no matter the day.
Hobbies?
I started golfing again these past few months. I got the opportunity to take some lessons and it’s been fun to do it again. I used to golf when I was a kid, I even got second place in two little tournaments! Aside from that, I’ve been having fun trying to skate.
Favorite object? Why?
A beautiful, epic, incredible one-of-a-kind guitar that was handmade and gifted to me by Professor José Artur (he will always be “Professor” to me, because he was my geometry teacher in high school). I still have no words to describe it. Still can’t believe how lucky I am to have it. I’m so tremendously grateful for it and won’t ever be able to thank him enough. It’s a masterpiece, honestly.
What about surfing. What role does it have in your life?
It has improved my mental and physical health in ways I honestly wasn’t expecting. I’ve never been a big sports person, because music has always been my go-to thing: my “sport”, my passion, my therapy, my distraction and, of course, my job. But about 2 years ago, when I was going through a tough time, I decided to hit Triki up - my instructor and good friend - and give it a try. I quickly found out that it, too, was pure therapy for me. I’ve always really loved the sea, so starting to surf made me feel so good, so present, so alive. It made me get up in the morning and get going, it made me laugh (we’re always playing around in the water), and it made me want to keep chasing that feeling. I’m just a rookie, but it clears my mind and makes me better. But I have to admit, I haven’t been in the water much lately... I am definitely NOT a winter person. Yikes!
One song / one band
“Hey, Ma”, by Bon Iver. Gets me every time.
What’s been keeping busy?
I’ve been taking these quiet (and weird) times to really focus on the music. I’m lucky enough to have my home studio, so I’ve been spending a lot of time there, recording, experimenting and preparing new stuff.
A unique moment in your life?
It’s hard to choose one, but right now I’m thinking of a concert I did with Cristóvam at a sold out Teatro Angrense, in 2016. When we played the last song, people started slowly standing up and we got a standing ovation. I still get chills just thinking about it.
If you could pick two people (alive or dead) one to sing / play with and one to have dinner or conversation, who would they be? Why?
Oh, so many. But because I have to choose, I’m gonna say John Mayer for both. For me, he’s one of the greatest guitar players and songwriters of all time, so it would be incredible to both play/sing with him and also have a great talk, because I love the way his mind works and his interviews blow me away very often. I’ve spent hours watching him talk, teach, and just ramble on about life itself.
What haven’t we asked you?
We will leave that up to the curious readers :)
