100% Azorean, João or Triki for his friends, is the kind of guy that no matter what he's doing, he's always cool and with good vibes. A professional surf instructor and avid surfer, it's easy to spot him in the water, mostly because of his surfing style and the attitude of someone always having lots of fun. When not salty and wet, you'll definitely find him listening to (or making) music in his studio/indoor skatepark/hideout, alone or surrounded by his good friends. Triki is definitely one of the coolest cat in town or, in this case, the island.

Who are you?
I’m João Alves aka Trikinices, born and raised on the beautiful Island of São Miguel. Pebble boy who grew up in the sea and in nature. Sailor, Surfer and Musician.

How’s life on the Island?
Living in the middle of the North Atlantic can often be scary for ordinary mortals. I have a very active and connected to land life, but it’s still a life that I consider very peaceful and healthy. Living on an island gives us an amazing freedom. Now you're surfing, now you're on top of a mountain, seeing an incredible view, or under a waterfall. Everything is so close!

Favorite place on the island? Why?
Fogo Lagoon. Nature in pure and raw state.

Hobbies?
Walking my dogs, Jiu Jitsu and photography.

Favorite object? Why?
Guitars. I love music and musical instruments in general, but the guitar really is that instrument that fascinates me.

One song / one band
Any song from The Beatles or Jimi Hendrix.

A unique moment in your life?
My last trip to Morocco. I caught great waves and the first one was a tube at Anchor point… I had to breathe for about 5 minutes in the lineup and calm down! Ahah I was on high!

What’s been keeping busy?
My project Black Sand Box – surf school and indoor Skate Park.

If you could pick two people (alive or dead) one to surf with and one to have dinner or conversation, who would they be? Why?
To surf I would choose Mason Ho. I would put a giant speaker with Jimi Hendrix on and we’d surf some crazy SLAB. I love his style and vibe. For dinner, I would choose my Grandpa João, who passed away during the pandemic and I didn't get a chance to say goodbye to him like I wanted to. I wish I could have hugged him one last time and been able to tell him how much I loved him. It’s very unfair!

What haven’t we asked you?
Do you like cheese? Ahahah
